Reuben Dangoor, an anonymous London-born viral artist, first caught the public’s imagination with his Legends of the Scene oil paintings, featuring some of the country’s best known grime MCs as British noblemen in stately homes.
In 2015, the works were shown during a Tate Late event and Dangoor has since continued to create accessible, thought-provoking art mostly shared through his Instagram page. During the FIFA World Cup in 2018 his quick reactions to England’s triumphs and eventual defeat were shared by both the public and the team members themselves; football continues to be a major theme in Dangoor’s work, with a large scale mural commissioned by Arsenal and adidas recently appearing near the team’s home ground on Holloway Road. Often responding to cultural, social and political events in the UK and around the world, Dangoor has used his work to comment on everything from political scandals at No 10 to Stormzy’s Glastonbury performance, continuing to reach audiences he believes he wouldn’t have access to through traditional platforms
